The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was awarded a traffic safety subgrant in the amount of $400,000.00 by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for impaired driving education and enforcement.
The purpose of this program is to educate the community about dangers associated with impaired driving and conduct high visibility operations to decrease impaired driving-related crashes, injuries, and fatalities in Hillsborough County.
FDOT has approved funding for reimbursement to HCSO for overtime (including salary and benefits) for deputies, breath analysis technicians, and prisoner transport deputies to conduct impaired driver education and enforcement activities in the amount of $400,000.00.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) 2021 Traffic Safety Fact Alcohol-Impaired Driving reported that Florida had a total of 3,738 traffic fatalities in 2021, the third highest of all states. Of those Florida fatalities, 1,019 (approximately 27%) were alcohol-impaired driving. This represents approximately 8.7% of all traffic fatalities in the United States in 2021.
The contract was executed on November 19, 2024, and the program will run through September 30, 2025.
