HCSO Awarded Traffic Safety Subgrant

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was awarded a traffic safety subgrant in the amount of $125,000.00 by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for Speed and/or Aggressive Education and Enforcement Operation. 

The purpose of this program is to educate the community about speeding and aggressive driving and conduct high visibility operations in an effort to decrease speeding and aggressive driving related crashes in Hillsborough County. 

This contract will reimburse HCSO for overtime for deputies, as well as equipment in the amount of $125,000.00 with the following breakdown:  

  • $110,000.00 for overtime salary and benefits for law enforcement officers, benefits to include FICA (Social Security and Medicare), Retirement, and Workers Compensation
  • $15,000.00 for speed measurement devices

According to the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), Traffic Safety Facts 2018, Nationwide, approximately 27.3% of the 19,576 drivers in fatal crashes who were legally alcohol-impaired were speeding. Legal alcohol impairment occurs when the Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) is more than 0.08 g/dl.  The contract was executed on November 14, 2021 and the program will run through September 30, 2022.
