The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deputy-involved incident.

On April 28, 2022, just before 12:30 a.m., deputies responded to a report of a man, possibly under the influence, running in and out of traffic on the 3000 block of Causeway Blvd in Tampa. When deputies arrived on the scene, they observed a man crossing multiple lanes of traffic, putting himself and other drivers at risk.

Deputies gave the suspect several orders to get out of the road for his safety. The suspect then took off running down the road, causing deputies to chase after him, and attempt to restrain him. The suspect was resistant and became violent, biting a deputy several times.

Deputies were able to bring the suspect into custody, at which point, the suspect suffered a medical episode and became unresponsive. Deputies quickly began life-saving measures, and the individual was transported to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition. He is facing charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, subject to provisions of baker act.

The deputy who was bitten also suffered an arm injury. The injury is non-life-threatening.

Causeway Blvd was shut down for a brief time to allow deputies to conduct their investigation. The roadway has since reopened.
