Detectives arrest suspects involved in shootout at Brandon apartments

UPDATE, July 17, 2020:

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has arrested three people in connection to a shootout within the Lakewood Place Apartments, located at 1701 Chapman Drive in Brandon.
 
As a result of the investigation that took place over the past several weeks, Luis Monge, Jawuan King, and Devin Smith have been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting.
 
When Devin Smith was taken into custody, deputies recovered three firearms. (pictured below)
 
The case is still active and open and additional charges could be pending. Any updates will come from the Public Affairs Office.
 
Luis Monge

• 21 years old
• six (6) time convicted felon

Charges

• Felon in Possession of a Firearm
• Felon in Possession of a Firearm (ammunition)
• Discharge of a Firearm in Public or Residential Property.

Jawuan Malik King

• 24 years old
• two (2) time convicted felon

Charges

• Charged with Felon in Possession of a Firearm (x2)
• Carrying a Concealed Firearm (x2)
• Discharge of a Firearm in Public or Residential Property
• six (6) outstanding warrants for Violation of Probation (Armed Trafficking, Carrying Concealed Firearm, Possession of Heroin, Possession of Phenethylamine (10 grams), Possession of Cannabis with Intent to Deliver/Sell and Possession of a Controlled Substance)

Devin Dominique Smith

• 21 years old
• previously charged with eight (8) felonies but has zero (0) guilty convictions

• Armed Possession of a Controlled Substance
• Shooting at within or into a Building (x2)
• Shooting at within or into a Vehicle
• Carrying a Concealed Firearm
• Discharge of a Firearm in Public or Residential Property

Original Release:

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is searching for suspects involved in a shootout within the Lakewood Place Apartments, located at 1701 Lake Chapman Drive in Brandon.

The incident occurred on June 10, 2020 at approximately 2:50 p.m. Upon arrival to the scene, detectives found more than 60 shell casings and a Smith & Wesson magazine.

After reviewing surveillance video, they also discovered three vehicles believed to have been involved in the shooting:

• 2020 Gray Kia Sportage bearing Florida tag KXBW71 (VIN: KNDPM3AC6L7748213)
• 2016 Red Honda Accord bearing no Florida tag (VIN: 1HGCR2F5XGA207227)
• White Chevrolet Malibu (possible vehicle)

At this time, one suspect has been arrested. Luis Monge, 21, was identified with the help of a witness who saw him fire his weapon. Monge was the driver of the gray Kia Sportage and detectives located a Smith & Wesson pistol inside the vehicle. Monge is a six-time convicted felon and confessed to being in possession of a firearm and discharging it inside of the Lakewood Place Apartments. He is charged with two counts of Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Discharge of a Firearm in Public or Residential Property. 

"The suspect and others involved recklessly discharged their firearms, which thankfully, in this case, did not injure an innocent bystander," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "We are asking for the public's assistance to help identify other people involved in this senseless display of violence."
