In its continuous effort to make Hillsborough County roadways safer, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is conducting High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) details.
The primary purpose of this contract is to educate the public. HVE is funded through a contract with the University of North Florida in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation. The HVE Operation will run through May of 2022.
Since launching the operation on September 13, 2021, HCSO has dedicated more than 735 hours to HVE. As of January 11, 2022, deputies have made contact with 1,040 pedestrians, 522 bicyclists, 854 motorists providing educational materials on pedestrian safety. Warnings have been issued to 219 pedestrians, 49 bicyclists, and 883 motorists. Citations have been issued to five pedestrians, two bicyclists and 129 motorists.
According to FDOT, Hillsborough County ranks 4th in Florida for serious and fatal traffic crashes.
"We need drivers to obey the rules of the road and remain hyper-aware of their surroundings at all times," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "These operations are meant to raise awareness and focus on educating drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Traveling on a roadway should not be a dangerous experience, but failure to follow traffic laws puts everyone at risk. Together we can save lives."
