The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was awarded a traffic safety subgrant in the amount of $200,000.00 by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for the Work Zone Education and Enforcement Operation.
The purpose of this program is to educate the community about work zone safety and conduct high visibility operations in an effort to decrease crashes in and around work zones in Hillsborough County.
FDOT has approved funding for reimbursement to HCSO for overtime (salary and benefits) for deputies conducting work zone education and enforcement activities in the amount of $200,000.00.
The Florida Department of Transportation 2025 Highway Safety Matrix-Ranking of Florida Counties ranked Hillsborough County fourth out of 26 Florida counties with a population of over 200,001 that have the highest total serious injuries and fatalities within work zones.
The National Work Zone Safety Campaign Information Clearinghouse reported that Florida contributed 55 fatal crashes and 57 fatalities in work zones in 2021. Signal Four Analytics reported that Hillsborough County work zone crashes increased 27% from 2022 to 2023, for a total of 718 work zone crashes in 2023.
The contract was executed on November 01, 2024 and the program will run through September 30, 2025.
