As families begin to venture out from sheltering in place to celebrate Memorial Day, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister is reminding residents to be careful on the water or on the shore for the holiday.
A public service announcement (PSA) was released Monday on the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office social media accounts.
“Be sure to keep safety as a top priority,” advised Sheriff Chronister in the video message. “Never drink and drive, make sure everyone in the car is buckled up, stick to the speed limit and focus on the road.”
The HCSO DUI Enforcement Squad will be saturating the county roadways for the holiday in an effort to quickly identify impaired drivers and deter others from driving drunk.
Sheriff Chronister advised boaters to designate a sober captain before going out on the water and make sure their vessels have enough life jackets for everyone on board.
He went on to remind residents that while coming together with family and friends is important for the holiday, social distancing guidelines are still in place.
“I know many are looking forward to some good food and company, but remember, the CDC continues to recommend social distancing to prevent COVID-19 from spreading,” said Sheriff Chronister.
According to the CDC, individuals should avoid gathering in large groups and stay at least six feet from others when possible.
