Hurricane Helene Recovery: Contractor Fraud Warning

In the wake of Hurricane Helene, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office urges residents to be vigilant against potential contractor fraud.

Tips to Avoid Fraud:

  1. Verify contractor licenses and insurance, even for jobs that don't require licensure.
  2. Research contractors thoroughly, checking Better Business Bureau profiles and customer reviews.
  3. Be wary of door-to-door solicitations, especially following natural disasters.
  4. Avoid pressure tactics for large down payments or "limited time" offers.
  5. Be cautious about extremely low prices.
  6. Don't make deals involving "leftover materials" from previous jobs.
  7. Don't pay with cash or gift cards since they are untraceable.
  8. Avoid contractors who won't provide a written agreement.
  9. Avoid contractors who attempt to avoid pulling permits.
  10. Stick to agreed-upon quotes and don't pay more than estimated.
