Hillsborough woman named Florida School Crossing Guard of the Year

Ellen Cipriani, a school crossing guard at Riverview Elementary, has been selected as the Florida School Crossing Guard of the Year. Cipriani has been a crossing guard in Hillsborough County since September 2011. Her nomination was one of more than 100 from across the state. 
 
In total, Hillsborough County had five nominees for the award. The other four were: Janet Anderson, Grady Elementary; Xavier Davis, Mintz Elementary; Norman Jones, Seffner Elementary; Donald Spohr, Northwest Elementary.
 
Attributes for selection of Florida's School Crossing Guard of the Year include professionalism, positive attitude, reliability, and effective communication with children about crossing procedures and traffic safety. 
 
As a program, Hillsborough County was chosen as the Florida School Crossing Guard Program of the Year. 
 
February 7 is Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in Florida, which recognizes the hard work and dedication of those individuals who keep Florida’s school children safe as they go to and from school. FDOT works with law enforcement agencies and provides standards and uniform training across the state to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the program.
