VIDEO: HCSO searching for hit-and-run suspect

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is asking for the assistance of the public to locate a driver involved in a hit-and-run crash on Bearss Avenue in Tampa.

Just before 10 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, deputies responded to the intersection of E Bearss Avenue and N 22nd Street in reference to a traffic crash involving a pedestrian. An adult male was located with serious injuries and transported to Tampa General Hospital where he later died.

Surveillance video in the area shows the victim walking north across the westbound lanes of Bearss Avenue when he stepped into the path of a gray or silver vehicle. After hitting the victim, the driver continued on Bearss Avenue without stopping to render aid.

The video has been shared to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1p0wUd87rc&feature=youtu.be

Detectives are asking anyone who may have been in the area of the crash to call 813-247-8200 with information that could lead to an arrest. Detectives are working to notify next of kin for the victim, whose address is listed as at-large.

"It is hard to understand how anyone could hit someone and simply drive away without so much as stopping to check on them. It is cruel and it is illegal," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "While this surveillance video is difficult to watch, we are hoping by releasing it that someone will recognize the vehicle involved in the crash and help detectives locate the driver."
