Sheriff Chad Chronister offers Labor Day weekend safety tips

As Hillsborough County residents soak up the last days of summer, Sheriff Chad Chronister is offering safety advice to anyone planning to hit the roadways, waterways, or ride out the Labor Day holiday weekend at home.

Those traveling, especially residents who haven’t driven in a while due to COVID-19 restrictions, should remember to follow all of the rules of the road, put their phones down, and never drink and drive.

“Operating a motor vehicle after just one or two drinks is dangerous,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Choose a designated driver before your Labor Day celebrations. The same applies if you are hitting the water. Don’t drink while boating.”

In the PSA released through social media on Friday, September 4, Sheriff Chronister added that safety on the water also includes having an emergency kit and life vests for everyone on board the vessel.

For those lighting fireworks at home due to large holiday celebrations being canceled, it’s important to remember not to light more than one firework at a time, maintain a safe distance from spectators, and never allow children to handle fireworks.

Sheriff Chronister’s Labor Day Safety PSA can be viewed on the HCSO Sheriff YouTube channel.
