The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating an early morning shooting that occurred on Tealwood Drive in Brandon.
At approximately 4:30 a.m. on August 9, 2020, HCSO received a 911 call in reference to shots fired at Woodberry Woods Apartments on Tealwood Drive. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found one man dead in the doorway of the unit.
At this time, detectives have learned the decedent began knocking on the door just before 4:30 a.m. A female resident could not see who it is, but cracked open the door. The decedent pushed the door open and a verbal argument ensued between the two. The decedent then confronted a male who was also in the apartment. The decedent shot and struck the man at least one time, which caused a non-life threatening injury to his lower body.
In fear for her life, the woman retreated back into a bedroom and retrieved a firearm. She returned to the living room area where another verbal confrontation takes place and almost immediately, there is an exchange of gunfire between the decedent and the woman. The woman shot the decedent who was later found in the doorway of the apartment unit by deputies. The woman was not injured in the incident.
"We believe the decedent and woman involved in this shooting knew each other," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "We are still investigating the events that led up to this incident, however, it does appear domestic in nature."
This remains an active and ongoing investigation. All further updates will be sent from the Public Affairs Office.
