Detectives asking the public to remain vigilant during trips to the bank

Since the beginning of the year, there have been more than 20 bank jugging incidents that have occurred within Hillsborough County. Bank jugging is a crime in which criminals watch customers walk in and out of banks, in hopes that they come out with some form of bank bag, envelope, or another indication that victims are walking out with a large sum of money. Criminals then attempt to burglarize them and take off with the money. The incidents are currently being investigated by both the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and Tampa Police Department.

So far in 2021, there have been 27 incidents of bank jugging throughout Hillsborough County. From those cases, approximately $110,000 has been stolen from victims. The incidents occurred at various bank institutions and stores in the county, with most happening within HCSO's District III, which includes Citrus Park, Westchase, Town 'n' Country, and Carrollwood areas. To preserve the integrity of the investigations, the locations of the incidents cannot be released at this time.

"We must all do our part to protect ourselves and safeguard our money," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "Even if you're going to the bank in broad daylight, criminals will watch from their parked cars to see what you're bringing back with you. Be aware of your surroundings and if you're returning to your car with money, keep it hidden in your purse or pocket. Remember, if you see something suspicious, say something and call 911."

Sheriff Chronister is also urging drivers and passengers to lock their car doors when exiting and returning to their vehicles.
