The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was awarded a traffic safety subgrant in the amount of $150,000.00 by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for Teen Driver Education and Enforcement Operation.
The purpose of this operation is to educate teen drivers about roadway safety and conduct high visibility operations in an effort to decrease crashes involving teens that occur within Hillsborough County.
This grant will reimburse HCSO for overtime (including salary and benefits) for deputies and community service aides conducting teen driver-related education and enforcement activities in the amount of $150,000.00.
The Florida Department of Transportation 2025 Highway Safety Matrix-Ranking of Florida Counties ranked Hillsborough County fourth of the 26 most populous counties for the number of total (actual) teen driver-related serious injuries and fatalities during 2018-2022.
According to Signal Four Analytics, there were 1,218 teen driver-related crashes in Hillsborough County in 2023, with Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) responding to approximately 53.3% of those crashes.
The contract was executed on November 1, 2024 and the program will run through September 30, 2025.
