Fireworks safety warning from Sheriff Chad Chronister

Sheriff Chad Chronister is reminding Hillsborough County residents planning to celebrate New Year's Eve with fireworks to use caution. In a public service announcement (PSA) released on social media Monday, Sheriff Chronister advised that safety must come before fun when explosives are involved.

"Remember, alcohol and fireworks don't mix," warned Sheriff Chronister. "Use your head, or lose a hand. It's that simple."

He also reminded viewers that children should never handle fireworks without the supervision of an adult.

Residents are asked to keep these additional safety tips in mind from the National Council on Fireworks Safety:

  • Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks.
  • Know your fireworks; read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions.
  • Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks.
  • Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away.
  • Use fireworks outdoors in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles.
  • Never relight a “dud” firework.
  • Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby.
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them into metal or glass containers.
  • Do not experiment with homemade fireworks.
