The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was a $125,000 traffic safety subgrant from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) for Occupant Protection Education and Enforcement Operation.

According to the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA), of 22,215 passenger vehicle occupants killed in 2019, 47% were not wearing seat belts.  Within Florida, 42% of the 1,585 passengers that were killed were unrestrained.

The purpose of the program is to educate the community about the importance of occupant protection and conduct high-visibility operations in an effort to decrease occupant protection-related injuries and fatalities in Hillsborough County.  The FDOT grant will reimburse HCSO for overtime salary benefits for law enforcement officers.

The Occupant Protection Education and Enforcement Operation will run through September 30, 2023.
