HCSO announces re-opening of Vocational Training Center

After closing its doors because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Vocational Training Center is back open.

Days after HCSO held its grand opening of the new 10,000-square-foot facility back in March, the Vocational Training Center was shut down before it could hold any classes. This week, 12 inmates began training to learn how to perform basic automotive services. Classes are taught by certified instructors through Hillsborough County Public Schools and Hillsborough technical colleges.

The Vocational Training Center was built to prepare inmates for life after they finish their sentences, in hopes of reducing the rate of recidivism in the community. Once they have completed a curriculum, inmates will receive a certificate in their chosen field.

"They can take that certificate and get gainful employment, again helping to reduce the likelihood they find themselves back in one of our detention centers," said Sheriff Chad Chronister.

In the coming weeks, inmates will also have the opportunity to learn other trades like welding, carpentry and how to operate a forklift.

Video of the first day of classes and an interview with Sheriff Chronister on the re-opening can be viewed here.
