Overview

The primary role of the Business Intelligence (BI) Report Writer is to scope, develop, and deploy various on-demand smart data sets that provide Sheriff’s Office strategic staff clear insights to establish workforce and capital planning roadmaps, influence and manage preventative maintenance decisions, and align workforce resources. This position works closely with various department stakeholders (e.g., command management, crime analyst business managers, end-users, technical staff) to gather and analyze requirements and data source needs, to collaborate with technical staff regarding database specifications from data extracts to deployments; and develop accurate and comprehensive data sets and related BI reports agencywide.

Duties & Responsibilities

Note: Depending on assigned responsibilities, employees may perform some or all the duties below.

  • Collaborate with criminal intelligence analysts to assess their reporting needs and provide tailored recommendations.

  • Design and develop database tables to organize and store intelligence data efficiently.

  • Assemble, organize, and analyze diverse sets of raw intelligence data from various sources.

  • Employ statistical analyses and predictive modeling to uncover patterns and trends in crime data.

  • Create and maintain complex Structured Query Language (SQL) queries and stored procedures to manipulate and retrieve data.

  • Develop reports and dashboards using reporting applications such as SQL Reporting Services (SSRS), Crystal Reports, and Tableau.

  • Work closely with the information technology (IT) team to convey requirements and ensure proper implementation.

  • Proactively analyze and resolve discrepancies, errors, and inconsistencies in SQL data.

  • Ensure strict adherence to data governance, security, and privacy protocols.

  • Safeguard sensitive and confidential information while complying with Sheriff’s Office standard operating procedures (SOPs).

  • Ability to work effectively in a data warehouse environment with restricted access, adhering to a strict need-to-know policy.

Working Conditions

  • Working within an office environment within a law enforcement agency, courthouse/court complex, and/or corrections facility.

  • Remaining in a stationary position for extended periods of time at a keyboard, workstation, or assignment location.

  • May be required to engage in light physical exertion (e.g., lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight from 5 to 10 pounds).

  • May be required to work non-standard hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • May be required to visit other job sites to perform work.

Minimum Education & Experience

  • A high school diploma or possession of a GED certificate.

  • Five years of proven proficiency in SQL development, particularly in MS SQL Server.

  • Three years of experience in Tableau development including experience in building and optimizing dashboards using Tableau.

Additional Job Requirements

  • Attendance at the specified Sheriff's Office work location is required.

  • Depending on assignment, employees may be required to possess a valid Florida Driver License at time of employment. Driving history will be thoroughly reviewed and may be grounds for disqualification.

  • No visible tattoos on face, head, and neck. Tattoos determined to take away from the professional appearance of the Sheriff's Office must be covered with an appropriate white, black, or neutral covering.

  • No illegal drug sale within lifetime.

  • No illegal drug use within the past 36 months. No marijuana use within the last 12 months.

  • No felony convictions within lifetime.

  • No misdemeanor convictions involving perjury, false statement, or domestic violence within lifetime.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possession of a Tableau certification (e.g., Tableau Desktop Specialist, Tableau Certified Data Analyst, Tableau Server Certified Associate, Tableau Certified Consultant, Tableau Certified Architect).

  • Experience in developing crime data reports and business intelligence dashboards using Tableau.

  • Experience with public safety and/or law enforcement environments.

  • Experience working with senior level administrators/managers within an organization.

  • Experience communicating with technical and non-technical teams gathering feedback, problem solving, and communicating clearly on all levels.

  • Knowledge of Tableau Server Administration including licensing and security.

  • Strong technical analysis skills, particularly in the context of criminal intelligence data.
