Keeping Children Safe

In 2024, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners, is launching "Operation Safe Passage," a new traffic safety program aimed to protect students and enhance road safety.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed HB 657 in 2023 making speed cameras legal in Florida for the first time by allowing their use in school zones. Hillsborough County is working to implement the cameras following the bill’s passage.

Cameras placed in multiple school zones throughout the County will ensure that drivers follow posted speed limits, creating a safer environment for children.

HCSO has partnered with RedSpeed to provide the digital technology for this critical safety initiative to make school zones safer for students.
