Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer began his career with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in 2007. He has served in many areas of the Sheriff’s Office including Patrol, Street Crimes, Criminal Investigations Division and Professional Standards Bureau. Chief Deputy Maurer has served in supervisory roles including Field Training Supervisor, Professional Standards Bureau, District Patrol Shift Commander, the Tampa Bay Regional Intelligence Center, Deputy District Commander, Special Investigations Division Commander and the Colonel of the Department of Patrol Services.

Chief Deputy Maurer is a combat veteran of the United States Army, where he served as a Non-Commissioned Officer and Officer in the Infantry and Intelligence Branches.

He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of Phoenix, a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Economic Crime and Fraud Management from Utica College and a Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice Education from the University of Virginia. Chief Deputy Maurer is a Doctoral Candidate of Public Administration at California Baptist University. Additionally, he is a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum's Senior Management Institute for Police 93rd Session and the FBI National Academy’s 295th Session.

Chief Deputy Maurer currently serves as Co-Chairman of the Tampa Bay Urban Area Security Initiative and the Hillsborough County Public Safety Coordinating Council’s Domestic Violence Sub-Committee. He is a member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Joint Terrorism Task Force Executive Board and a member of the Central Florida High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Executive Board.

Chief Deputy Maurer is proud of his Hispanic heritage and is fluent in the Spanish language. Chief Deputy Maurer and his wife Indira have five children.
