Captain Cason Ulmer currently serves as the Deputy Commander for District III.
He is a Tampa native and earned a bachelor’s degree from Florida State University in 2008. In 2011, Captain Ulmer began his career at the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office being assigned to District III. Captain Ulmer’s career has led to multiple different areas of the office and opportunities to serve including, Street Crimes, Detective and Sergeant in the Special Investigations Division, Sergeant of District V General Offense Section, and most recently before the promotion to Captain, Lieutenant in the Community Outreach Division serving as the School Safety Bureau Commander.
In 2025, Captain Ulmer was awarded the Sheriff Chad Chronister’s Move the Needle Award for his contributions to the development of a revolutionary training. Captain Ulmer, with a team of dedicated and highly trained personnel, developed the School Based Active Threat Response Exercises were created. To this date, over 1200 sheriff’s office dayshift personnel have attended an iteration of the training focused on real world applications of neutralizing threats, first aid management, mutli-agency coordination, and reunification protocols.
Captain Ulmer is focused on maintaining positive relationships and open dialogue between sheriff’s office personnel and the community. These relationships lead directly to the reduction of crime as community trust in the sheriff’s office is continually fostered.
