Student Arrested for Bringing Firearm to Sumner High School

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has arrested a juvenile for bringing a firearm to Sumner High School.

On January 30, 2025, at approximately 3:30 p.m., an HCSO School Resource Deputy received a tip that a student had a firearm on campus.

A search was conducted, and HCSO made contact with Dontavious Walton, 14, who was in possession of a handgun.

Walton was taken into custody without incident and is facing the following charges:

  • Minor in Possession of a Firearm
  • Possession of a Firearm on School Property

"It is never acceptable to bring a firearm to school. This is not only against the law but incredibly dangerous," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "We are grateful for the quick response of our School Resource Deputy and the individual who provided the tip, ensuring the safety of our children. We will continue to take every measure necessary to keep our schools safe."

Any further information on this case will come from the Public Affairs Office.
