The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, in coordination with the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, arrested a Land O Lakes man on Thursday for stealing more than a dozen laptops from his employer in the Town N Country area and selling them online.On June 12, HCSO detectives were called to a health insurance provider called WellCare, located at 8725 Henderson Road in Town N Country, after the company reported a theft of approximately 50 HP laptops. It was discovered that the computers, totaling approximately $70,000, were removed from the IT department over the last few months and were being sold through the Facebook Marketplace and the OfferUp app.
The laptops were track down in Pasco County through a GPS system within the computers. On Thursday, June 13, HCSO detectives and street crimes deputies collaborated with the Pasco County Sheriff's Office to located and arrest 50-year-old John Marlin Burwell, an employee of WellCare, during a traffic stop. They found five HP laptops inside Burwell's vehicle. Burwell later admitted to taking the laptops from WellCare and selling them online. Approximately seven laptops were already sold. An additional 12 HP laptops were located at Burwell's residence in Land O Lakes.
With the help of PCSO, HCSO detectives recovered 17 stolen laptops. Burwell was arrested by PCSO for five counts of Dealing in Stolen Property. Charges are forth coming regarding the theft from Hillsborough County. Follow up will be conducted to attempt to locate the other stolen laptops.
