Retail Theft Arrest Leads to Recovery of Over $15K in Stolen Goods

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has recovered more than $15,000 in stolen merchandise during a proactive retail theft operation in Brandon.

On April 8, 2025, detectives with HCSO’s Organized Retail Theft Unit were conducting an operation at Regency Square Plaza when they observed a woman placing several items into her purse while inside a retail store.

After exiting the store without attempting to pay, she was detained by detectives positioned outside and identified as Stephanie Valdez, 46.

In plain view inside Valdez’s vehicle, detectives observed several bags filled with retail items. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered an estimated $15,000 to $20,000 worth of stolen goods from various retail stores.

Valdez admitted to repeatedly shoplifting since February.

She was taken into custody and is facing the following charge:

  • Felony Petit Theft

Further charges may be forthcoming.

"Let me be clear, retail theft is a crime, and it will not be ignored," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "When someone steals thousands of dollars in goods, they are not just targeting a store, they are stealing from our community. We will not allow criminals to treat hardworking people and businesses as easy targets."

This is an active investigation. Any updates will come from the Public Affairs Office.
