SHERIFF CHRONISTER PROVIDES UPDATE ON SABAL CENTER HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION

Sheriff Chad Chronister provided an update on the homicide investigation following a shooting at Sabal Center in Tampa on November 4, 2026.

On the morning of the shooting, Jacob Pearson, 35, made threats against Citibank after being contacted about a court summons over a debt of approximately $2,500.

Pearson said he would bring a rifle and a bulletproof vest to the Citibank offices. Law enforcement agencies in Orange County worked to locate him.

Orlando Police Department officers saw him leave a complex in a vehicle and issued an alert to area agencies.

Shortly before noon, Citibank notified HCSO of a credible threat to its Tampa campus, and deputies immediately responded. At 12:10 p.m., Pearson crashed his vehicle into the campus gate. At 12:11 p.m., he opened fire, killing an employee.

Deputies arrived on campus as the shooting began and immediately moved toward the gunfire. Within one minute, Citibank armed security guard John Fraley, 38, confronted Pearson in the building's cafeteria and shot him. Fraley is the Vice President and Intelligence Lead Analyst at Citibank.

At 12:16 p.m., deputies arrived at the cafeteria and began administering aid until Hillsborough County Fire Rescue arrived. Pearson was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 1:12 p.m.

"John Fraley confronted this suspect and is a hero, plain and simple. In a moment when most people would run away from danger, this guard ran toward it and stopped the threat within minutes of the first shots being fired," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "With more than 3,200 people on that campus, there is no doubt that these quick and courageous actions saved lives. We are deeply grateful to the entire Citibank security team for their training, their preparedness, and their bravery under unimaginable pressure."

The victim, Leanne Selman, 41, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Next of kin has been notified. Selman worked at Citibank for 9 years and served as a Learning Advisor for Citi Security and Investigative Services.

"Our hearts are broken for Selman's family, friends, and coworkers. She went to work yesterday like any other day and never came home," said Sheriff Chronister. "There is no justification for this cowardly act of senseless violence that has left a family and a community heartbroken."

Four other people went to the hospital and were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and have been released.

This remains an active investigation. All further updates will be provided by the HCSO Public Affairs Office.
