The training consists of a 360- to 390-hour Reserve Academy course, a passing score on the State of Florida required Auxiliary Certification Exam, and approximately 90- hour Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) post-academy training. The Sheriff’s Office pays the tuition costs for the Reserve Academy, which is held Monday - Thursday, 6:00 PM - 10:00PM and most Saturdays (full day). If the individual has already completed a Florida law enforcement auxiliary academy, his or her certification may be re-activated resulting in only needing to take the HCSO post-academy training. Learn to work with certified full time law enforcement deputies on various detail assignments throughout the Sheriff’s Office to become certified and eligible for promotion to Reserve 2 Deputy. Each Reserve 2 Deputy must serve a minimum of 20 volunteer hours each month on assigned duties.

Note for Trainees: Trainees are expected to learn the following duties while in a trainee status.
Work with a full time deputy and/or specialized units to include Canine, Warrants, Selective Enforcement Squad (Street Crimes Unit), Vice, Auto Theft Task Force, Aviation, Marine Unit, and DUI Enforcement.
Engage in various other law enforcement activities and duties to include assist with surveillances, securing crime scenes, rendering aid during natural disasters and join search parties, and performing traffic control services.
Perform other related duties as required.
Working knowledge of local, state, and federal laws pertinent to law enforcement.
Working knowledge of law enforcement guidelines and criminal investigation methods and techniques.
Working knowledge of traffic accident control measures and investigation methods and techniques.
Skill in the use and care of firearms and other law enforcement related equipment.
Skill in administering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid.

Required to wear a Sheriff’s Office provided uniform.
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED certificate.
Additionally, the following are required:
21 years of age or older.
United States citizen.
Of good moral character.
Six months tobacco free at time of application.
Must not possess any employment conflicts of interest (e.g., employment as bail bondsman, lawyer, private investigator, security guard, any job requiring a Class D or G Security License) at the time of appointment/employment.
Live within Hillsborough County or within Citrus, Hardee, Hernando, Lake, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota, or Sumter County as long as the residence is located within the 60-mile parameter of Falkenburg Road Jail at the time of appointment/employment.
Successful completion of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Law Enforcement Basic Abilities Test (LE BAT).
Successful completion of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Physical Abilities Assessment (PAA).
LE BAT Waiver Criteria: As of July 1, 2022, section 943.17(1)(g) states that any candidate wishing to enter a law enforcement academy that either
(i) is a veteran as classified in section 1.01(14), F.S.,
OR
(ii) holds an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university
is not required to take the LE BAT. Please note that veteran is defined as being honorably discharged from military service. No other discharge classifications qualify.

Note on the PAA: The course consists of (1) a 130-foot run to scale a 4-foot high stationary, solid wall; (2) a 100-foot run to a cone with another 40-foot run to a stair to complete a 70-step stair climb (1 step = 1st foot up, 2nd foot up, 1st foot down, 2nd foot down); (3) a 100-foot run to climb through a 3-foot high window; (4) a 50-foot run to navigate through cones in a serpentine manner, keeping cones on left or right as indicated on the cone; (5) a 20-foot movement (e.g., push, pull, drag, walk) of a 180-pound sled back and forth 5 times for a total of 100 feet; and (6) a 20-foot drag of a 160-pound dummy. Candidates must complete the course in 5:48 minutes or less in the proper athletic attire (i.e., athletic shirt, athletic pants/shorts, sneakers).

Depending on assignment, employees may be required to possess a valid Florida Driver License at time of employment. Driving history will be thoroughly reviewed and may be grounds for disqualification.
