What:

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office arrest 7 suspects in Cockfighting Raid

When:

Sun Dec 13, 2009 20:14:15

Where:

513 Greenway Drive, Plant City

Why/How:

HCSO deputies responded to 513 Greenway Drive today around 11:47 a.m. and discovered a cockfighting operation. Seven people were arrested on felony charges. In the back yard of the eastern Hillsborough County residence was a fighting pit and pens holding roosters, breeding hens and chicks.

Detectives discovered dozens of dead roosters on the property. Some of the birds had been tossed into a pit in the back yard; some were in a wheelbarrow; and some were in a sack. It is unknown how many roosters were killed in the cockfighting. A second pit was freshly covered and is believed to contain more dead birds.

Hillsborough County Animal Services was called to the scene, and investigators determined that all of the remaining roosters, most of which were prepared and ready for fighting, would be euthanized on scene. The number of roosters euthanized is at least 70.

There were dozens of hens and chicks in the pens, and those birds were to be returned to the property owner, who does not live at the residence and was not charged.

The investigation by HCSO, Animal Services and county Code Enforcement continues.
