On November 13, 2009 at 3:49 a.m. the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a burglary in progress at the Shadow Oaks Apartments located at 13901 N. Florida Av. Deputies arrived and a K-9 and handler tracked the suspect and found him hiding next to a van located at 13621 N. Florida Av. The deputies gave a command to stop and the suspect then fled and while fleeing a shot was fired by the suspect. Deputy Rizzo was traveling northbound on Florida Avenue in a marked Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle when the suspect ran in front of the deputy and fired one shot striking the windshield and missing striking the deputy. Another deputy that was on foot behind Deputy Rizzo took cover behind his vehicle.
The suspect continued to flee to the area of 13502 Capitol Drive where the K-9 handler tracked to and gave verbal commands to the suspect. The suspect failed to comply and the K-9 handler released the dog. The suspect was bitten in the right bicep area and left leg.
