Deputies Rescue Teenage Boy Capsized In
Tampa Bay
.
Late Saturday
afternoon two deputies with the Hillsborough County Marine Unit rescued
a 15 year old teenager stranded in Tampa Bay after his Jet Ski partially
sank during a violent thunderstorm. The victim called 911 from a cell
phone he kept wrapped in a zip lock baggie and reported his Jet Ski had
stalled and was filling up with water.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office immediately launched a search
and rescue operation sending out the Sheriff's Aviation and Marine
Units. The helicopter with the HCSO Aviation Unit had to abort the
search due to a large storm over the search area.
Master Deputy Allen Dekle and Master Deputy Troy Durrance with HCSO
Marine Unit continued responding to the area despite extremely rough
seas and severe weather. HCSO dispatcher Heather Lyden stayed on the
phone with the victim obtaining additional information in his
whereabouts and trying to keep him calm.
After talking to the victim for approximately 40 minutes, Lyden obtained
enough information to guide deputies to the victim's location. When
deputies arrived, they found the victim in the water clinging to his
partially submerged Jet Ski.
Deputies pulled the victim from the water and recovered his Jet Ski. The
victim and his jet ski were taken to the Davis Island boat ramp where
the victim was reunited with his mother. No injuries occurred during
this incident. |
