Today at 5:31 p.m. the suspect William Yates walked into Wachovia Bank at Sun City Plaza, and handed a bank teller a note demanding money. The suspect implied he had a gun and was given an undisclosed amount of cash. After fleeing the bank, witness spotted the suspect drive out of the parking lot in a red vehicle and head north on I75 from SR 674.

Deputies quickly responded to the scene and began searching the area.  During the search, Cpl Shawn Peters spotted a red vehicle north bound on I-75.  The deputy pulled in behind the vehicle and the driver began throwing cash out the window. Cpl Peters continued following the vehicle calling for additional units.

The suspect exited I-75 at Big Bend Rd, and as deputies surrounded his vehicle, the suspect pulled his vehicle to the shoulder of the road and surrendered. The suspect was taken into custody and after being identified by bank employees, he was charged with armed bank robbery.

Deputies recovered all the stolen cash and returned it back to Wachovia.

Detectives will investigate if Yates may be involved in other Tampa area robberies.
