Hillsborough Sheriff’s Deputies Train for Rachel's Law

On July 1, 2009, new legislation will take effect regarding the use and control of confidential informants by law enforcement agencies.  Known as "Rachel's Law", law enforcement agencies in Florida will have to follow certain protocol before allowing a citizen to act as a confidential informant on their behalf.

While the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has had a policy in place for years, the new legislation adds new safeguards designed for the protection of the identity of the informant as well as some considerations that the agency must weigh prior to activating an informant.  The policy is being updated accordingly.

The new information as well as the updated policy will be introduced and discussed to all supervisors whose deputies and detectives are charged with handling informants at an eight hour training seminar provided by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Training Division.  Training for the deputies and detectives will be held the following week.

While the Training Division recognizes that the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office policy regarding informant handling has been in place and adhered to for quite some time; there is an identified need to update the supervisors with the latest information which will also place the agency in compliance with Rachel's Law.

The supervisor training will begin Tuesday June 30, 2009 and Wednesday July 1, 2009 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
