Why/How:

On June 19, HCSO detectives and HCSO Child Protective Investigations personnel responded to a report of abuse of a 3-year-old boy. The child had been dropped off at a day care center, and workers there noticed extensive bruising on his arms, back and buttocks. HCSO investigators took the child for a medical examination by the county's Child Protection Team. It was determined the injuries were deliberate. In addition, the child had a large open sore on his bottom which had gone untreated and was infected, and required surgery at Tampa General Hospital. The mother of the child was arrested on June 19 for child abuse by medical neglect; the mother's live-in girlfriend was arrested June 23 for beating the boy because he accidentally soiled his pants.
