On June 24, 2009 the Florida Department of Children and Families will award five Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Deputies “Certificates of Commendation”.  These deputies will receive the commendation for their ongoing commitment to the successful implementation of the Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) model. This program has helped ensure incidents involving persons with mental illness end in a safe manner with a positive outcome.

The Department will also thank Sheriff Gee for the ongoing partnership on the Looking Ahead Program collocated at the Criminal Registration Unit. Under the leadership of Corporal Jimmy Compton, the program has screened thousands of registrants and aided hundreds in linkage to needed behavioral health and social services. Early data has shown this innovative program has had a measurable effect on public safety as evidenced by decreased recidivism and re-arrest.

The certificates will be presented at the Hillsborough Criminal Justice and Behavioral Health Summit on June 24, 2009, to be held at the Hillsborough Public Defender’s Office located at 700 E. Twiggs Street (1st Floor) from 1:00-2:30 p.m.
