Sheriff David Gee announces the results of a 10-month-long investigation into the illegal sale and distribution of prescription narcotics and the passing of fraudulent prescriptions.
Operation Bad Medicine resulted in the arrests of 111 individuals, including 30 who were served with arrest warrants today. Over the months detectives seized 8,400 dosage units of controlled substances. Among those arrested during the 10-month undercover operation were a medical doctor, two nurses and medical and dental assistants.
Detectives discovered a voluminous black market for prescription narcotics in the Tampa Bay area. Among the narcotics seized were roxicodone, dilaudid, oxycodone, morphine, methadone and Xanax. For example, a single dose of prescription painkiller would sell on the street for $11 to $15 per pill. Some individuals even sold their own prescription drugs for cash. Some individuals were charged with doctor shopping, where prescriptions for the same or similar therapeutic value narcotics were obtained within 30 days without the knowledge of the physicians.
