Sheriff Chronister reminding boaters to make safety a priority this holiday weekend

Sheriff Chad Chronister and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office want to remind all boaters to enjoy the waterways with safety in mind this holiday weekend.

Last year, registered recreational vessels topped one million in the state of Florida. Deputies will conduct vessel checks to ensure boaters have all the necessary equipment for safe travels on the water. Boaters should take all safety measures before getting on the water, which include checking local news outlets for any severe weather, properly outfitting all passengers with a life jacket, and designating a sober driver.

"If you are found to be drinking and operating a boat, I can promise you that our deputies will arrest you and take you to jail," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "We are not trying to rain on your parade. Drinking while boating is a recipe for disaster, just as it is on land. Please take care of your fellow passengers and all those trying to enjoy the holiday weekend by designating a sober driver."

Anyone who is facing an emergency situation on the water is urged to call 911.

Sheriff Chronister released a new PSA on boating safety that can be viewed here.
