A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputy was seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle during a foot pursuit.

On Thursday, May 28, 2020, approximately 9:35 a.m., the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office received a report of two suspects shoplifting at a Family Dollar on North Florida Avenue in Tampa.

The teenage suspects, 14 and 15 years old, fled the store as deputies arrived. Detective Leonard Stoll, 59, came in contact with one of the suspects and after talking with him, he advised the suspect he was under arrest. The suspect broke free while Detective Stoll was attempting to detain him and took off running. During a foot pursuit, Detective Stoll was hit by a passing car at the intersection of North Florida Ave and W Fletcher Ave.

Detective Stoll suffered serious injuries. He was transported to Tampa General Hospital. Assisting deputies caught and arrested the 14-year-old suspect, who Detective Stoll was pursuing, while the 15-year-old returned to the scene shortly after.

The driver of the car that hit Detective Stoll remained at the scene and is fully cooperating with deputies. At this time, speed and impairment are not considered factors in the crash.

Detective Stoll was hired by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in 2007 and previously served as a U.S. Marine.

The suspects in this case have a prior criminal history, including retail theft, aggravated battery and felony criminal mischief. The 14-year-old suspect is currently on probation. Due to their ages, the suspects' names will not be released.

"Our deputies are committed to protecting the public, and in this case, Detective Stoll put his duty to serve above his own safety," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "Caught in the moment, Detective Stoll crossed a busy intersection and was seriously injured. We are thankful he is alive and praying he finds strength in knowing our office and community are proud of his dedication. As for the suspects in this case, we hope they realize their actions have serious consequences and they are lucky no one was killed."
