About Position

Perform duties in support of criminal “Cold Case” investigations.

Duties & Responsibilities

Note: Depending on assigned responsibilities, employees may perform some or all of the duties below.

  • Review cold homicide investigations for potential leads, new laboratory analysis, and any other investigative action as necessary.
  • Prepare “Cold Case” review information form dissemination to the cold case volunteer working group.
  • Hold “Cold Case” review meetings with the volunteer group to assess the cases for potential leads and solvability.
  • Answer citizen telephone calls as they relate to cold homicide investigations.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of State and County laws and regulations governing criminal and administrative investigations.
  • Working knowledge of search and seizure laws.
  • Working knowledge of interview and interrogation techniques.
  • Working knowledge of latent investigations and investigative techniques.
  • Working knowledge of procedures relevant to forensic evidence submission techniques.
  • Skill in the application of interviewing and interrogation techniques.
  • Skill in evidence gathering techniques and procedures.
  • Skill in techniques used for the submitting forensic evidence for laboratory analysis.
  • Ability to analyze statements and evidence to develop logical conclusions for further investigation.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain liaison with civilian volunteers supporting the homicide cold case initiative.
  • Ability to use a computer and related software.
  • Ability to deal with confidential information.

Required Minimum Education & Experience

  • A high school diploma or possession of a GED certificate.
  • Five years of criminal justice investigative or law enforcement experience.
OR
  • An associate’s degree with a major in forensic science, criminology, criminal justice, criminal law, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Four years of criminal justice investigative or law enforcement experience.
OR
  • A bachelor’s degree with a major in forensic science, criminology, criminal justice, criminal law, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Three years of criminal justice investigative or law enforcement experience.

Preferred Education & Experience

  • Ten years of experience investigating homicides or violent criminal offenses (robbery, assault, battery, sexual battery).

Additional Job Requirements

  • Attendance at the specified Sheriff's Office work location is required.
  • Depending on assignment, employees may be required to possess a valid Florida Driver License at time of employment. Driving history will be thoroughly reviewed and may be grounds for disqualification.
  • No visible tattoos on face, head, and neck. Tattoos determined to take away from the professional appearance of the Sheriff's Office must be covered with an appropriate white, black, or neutral covering.
  • No illegal drug sale within lifetime.
  • No illegal drug use within the past 36 months. No marijuana use within the last 12 months.
  • No felony convictions within lifetime.
  • No misdemeanor convictions involving perjury, false statement, or domestic violence within lifetime.
  • No dishonorable discharge from any branch of the United States Armed Forces, the United States Coast Guard, National Guard, or Reserve Forces.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation including criminal, reference, employment, and neighborhood checks; polygraph; medical evaluation; and drug screening.
